Because you shouldn't need a degree to communicate with people.

Using Google Apps doesn't have to be an overwhelming experience.  In fact, it should be a little fun.  In order to get you going quickly, here are some important things to remember:

  1. This is a good move.  The way people communicate is changing.  Email is no longer the best (or most secure) way to connect with colleagues or peers.  Document sharing is where it's at.  Our old standard way of doing things simply did not fit the way we were trying to use it.  You may get a little frustrated that something does not work the way the old system did, or that you cannot find what you need, but remember, this is a good change.
  2. You will have a learning curve.  It takes time to adjust to anything new in life.  Chances are it probably took you some time to figure out how to best use your current software.  The great thing about our new system is that you can continue to use what works best for you.  If you are comfortable using Outlook or Apple Mail, then you are more than welcome to continue using them with a few easy adjustments.  If you want to experience everything that OMAP offers, we will make it as easy as possible to learn how to get the things you need done, faster.  Life should be about people, not about software.
  3. Don't be afraid to experiment.  Many people who have not been given the opportunity to use technology have a fear that they will break something.  Most of the time, this is an irrational fear.  Failure is a part of learning to use a tool.  It took Thomas Edison many thousands of tries before he found the right ingredients for success.  Everyone fails at using new technology; it is simply a part of life.  If you give up too early, you may be missing out on something that could make your daily tasks easier.

If you need some help getting started, we have put together a number of videos that walk you through setting up your email, using Google Docs, how to build your web sites, and a number of other features of this system.  Start here.

Your "@my.occ.edu" email address is required this year.  All your professors will use this email address to communicate with you.  If you are having problems logging in, tell us.
